Flutist Doriot Anthony Dwyer was born on this date in 1922 in Illinois. Her mother was also a flutist and was Doriot’s first teacher, and her father was a cousin of famous suffragette Susan B. Anthony. Early in her career a a professional musician, Doriot Anthony Dwyer was second flute in the National Symphony Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. When she became principal flute in the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1952 (a job she held until 1990), she was one of the first women to be awarded principal chair for a major U.S. orchestra.
