I learned about the French composer Mel Bonis only a few years ago when I had the opportunity to perform some of her music with friends. Mel Bonis lived from 1858-1937, which is why it was advantageous to use the name “Mel” instead of her full name Melanie. She started piano lessons as a young girl and quickly showed exceptional talent. Thanks to a family friend, she was introduced to composer Cesar Franck. She soon began studying at the Paris Conservatory alongside fellow students Claude Debussy and Gabriel Pierne. Today’s Beautiful Music is the SUITE EN TRIO OP. 59 by Mel Bonis from a 2015 concert by flutist Barbara Wagner, violinist Olena Savka, and pianist Anna Sutyagina.
