Beautiful Music NOW – July 29, 2022

Two iconic early music specialists died within the past few days, both violinists. Marie Leonhardt (93) was the widow of legendary harpsichordist Gustav Leonhardt, and Alice Harnoncourt (91) was the widow of conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt. Along with their partners, these outstanding musicians were part of the wave of renewed interest in baroque music and historically informed performance practices in the middle of the 20th century. Today’s Beautiful Music features Swiss-Dutch violinist Marie Leonhardt playing the CHACONNE in d BWV1004, and Austrian violinist Alice Harnoncourt performing Bach’s Concerto for Violin & Oboe BWV 1060. You will also find links to obituaries for both of these trailblazing musicians.
