Beautiful Music in Difficult Times March 10, 2022

Little is known about composer Paola Massarenghi. She was born in 1565 in Parma, and according to the website A MODERN REVEAL [see link below], she is credited for being the second woman ever to have a madrigal published during her lifetime. Only one of her compositions is known to have survived: the madrigal Quando spiega l’insegn’al sommo padre, composed when Paola Massarenghi was 20 years old. Sadly, I can find no recording of her work. However, I wanted to tell you about her and, perhaps, encourage someone to record her music.

For today’s Beautiful Music, I offer a short song by Lady Mary Dering who lived from 1629-1704. She composed the song AND THIS IS ALL? WHAT ONE POOR KISS? in 1655, and it is performed by countertenor Tom Mebarki and lutenist Emma Spinelli.
