Beautiful Music in Difficult Times February 25

This is Beautiful Music performed by legendary singer, Simon Estes. The renowned musician is joined by another legend, trumpeter Maurice Andre, performing THE TRUMPET SHALL SOUND from George Frideric Handel’s oratorio MESSIAH. The Estes and Andre families had something else in common: they were coal-mining families. Dr. Estes’ father was a coal miner, and Mr. Andre himself was a coal-miner, like other members of his family. Both men pursued their passion for music, and cultivated their extraordinary talents. (Maurice Andre died on this date — February 25 — in 2012. His biography and obituary are linked below.)

There is also a link to the ceremony held when Dr. Estes, an Iowa native, was honored for his brilliant career with the naming of the concert hall at Iowa State University, where he has been a faculty member and The F. Wendell Miller Distinguished Artist in Residence. There’s also a link to a talk by Simon Estes about his life philosophy and values.
