Beautiful Music in Difficult Times February 24, 2022

Melika Fitzhugh has an extraordinary range of musical interests. She is a Harvard-trained composer who enjoys teaching and playing a variety of instruments for folk dance ensembles, including: violin/viola/violoncello/double bass, acoustic guitar/bass, recorders, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, and hand percussion including dumbek/djembe/kahoun. She takes special delight in composing contemporary music for ancient instruments.

I had the honor of interviewing her (link below to our conversation) and enjoying her speak passionately about her musical palette. (listen to find out which early instrument she likens to chocolate!)

Today’s Beautiful Music features one of Melika Fitzhugh’s compositions featuring recorders. Transparent Letters Across the Sky was recorded virtually — with the composer conducting — for “Play the Recorder Day” in March 2021.
