Six Concertos from the early 1700s were attributed to a “mystery composer” until well into the 20th century, when it was solved by musicologist Alfred Dunning. The composer himself had asked to conceal the attribution — he was a count and diplomat, and considered music only a hobby. You’ll hear one of those mystery concertos on Sunday Baroque.

October 5th is the annual observance of WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY … it’s an opportunity to honor the contributions and influences of teachers on our communities. Sunday Baroque will feature some baroque era musicians who were also influential teachers and the talented students they inspired.
Violinist Chiara Banchini founded her period instrument group Ensemble 415 in 1981. The chamber ensemble’s name refers to the presumed pitch for tuning instruments in the baroque era: the note “A” is calibrated at 415 herz, which is lower (flatter) than the pitch used for modern instruments. Sunday Baroque will feature a performance by Ensemble 415 so you can hear the sound of that historically informed characteristic.

Mexico celebrates its annual Independence Day on September 16, and in the U.S., the observance of National Hispanic Heritage Month extends from September 15-October 15. Sunday Baroque will get into the spirit with some Mexican baroque music by Manuel Zumaya, who was born in Mexico City in the 1670s and worked as chapel master at the cathedral there.
