Antonio Vivaldi’s flute concerto nicknamed The Night might be more accurately called The NightMARE! Its movements have titles such as “Phantasms” and “The Dream” and its sneaky, creepy sounding slow movements make this one of Vivaldi’s more unusual Concertos. You’ll hear Vivaldi’s ghostly concerto in anticipation of Halloween on Sunday Baroque this weekend.

Successful collaborations play an important role in musical history. In the baroque era, there was George Frideric Handel and his fan and patron Charles Jennens, who partnered with him on several oratorios, including SAUL. And there was James Paisible who worked with English playwright and actor Colley Cibbers on his comedy SHE WOU’D AND SHE WOU’D NOT. Those are a couple of the productive collaborations coming up on Sunday Baroque this weekend.

For some musicians in the baroque era, making music was only a part-time profession … some strategically worked day jobs until they could support themselves in music, some had family wealth that allowed them to be dilettantes, and quite a few women composers in the baroque era were nuns who composed sacred music for their religious communities. You’ll hear compositions by some of these part- time musicians on Sunday Baroque this Labor Day weekend.
