Happy International Women’s Day! Yesterday’s Beautiful Music featured Lili Boulanger — today we’re featuring her more famous sister, Nadia Boulanger, who lived from 1887-1979. Nadia Boulanger is remembered best for being an influential teacher and mentor to some of the world’s great musicians, including Igor Stravinsky, Aaron Copland, Adolphus Hailstork, Phillip Glass, Quincy Jones, and Astor Piazzolla. “Mademoiselle” (as she liked to be called) was also an organist and a conductor — the first woman to conduct a number of major symphony orchestras, including the NY Philharmonic, The Boston Symphony Orchestra, The Philadelphia Orchestra, and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. She had low regard for her own compositions, and didn’t write all that much. Today’s Beautiful Music highlights what a loss it is that she didn’t compose more. It’s Nadia Boulanger’s FANTAISIE POUR PIANO ET ORCHESTRE. You can also watch a 1977 documentary about Nadia Boulanger, with footage of her and of some of those who knew and studied with her.
