Happy 6th Birthday, Fiona! I’ll admit it — I’m smitten with a hippo. Not just any hippo — her name is Fiona, and she lives at the Cincinnati Zoo with her mom, Bibi, her stepdad, Tucker, and her 5-month-old baby brother Fritz. Fiona was born 6 years ago today, prematurely and dangerously tiny — her survival was in serious doubt. But the community rallied around her, the Cincinnati Zoo staff cared for her around-the-clock, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital staff provided their expertise in caring for fragile newborn human babies, and so many others in the community (near and far) rallied in support. Fiona survived, and thrived, and became a major ham and international social media star. Today’s Beautiful Music is a July 2017 pop-up performance at Cincinnati Zoo by Starling Chamber Orchestra, a Cincinnati-based youth ensemble led by violinist, conductor, and teacher, Kurt Sassmannshaus.
