Beautiful Music in Difficult Times September 19

I always love discovering musicians I didn’t know about before. Today’s Beautiful Music is by Rosanna Scalfi Marcello who lived from c. 1704 until after 1742. She was a singer in Venice, and became the student of composer (and nobleman) Benedetto Marcello. You may guess by her last name that she became more than his student – and you’d be correct! They married secretly, but due to their vastly different social standings, their marriage was never formally registered and, after his death, was nullified. This is Rosanna Scalfi Marcello’s Cantata #4, sung by countertenor Darryl Taylor, with cellist Ezra Seltzer, and harpsichordist Jennifer Peterson.
