Remember when the phrase “September 11th” was just another date on the calendar? But for 20 years now we all recognize it as shorthand for a gut-wrenching tragedy. Anyone who remembers that day remembers exactly where they were, what they were doing, and how they felt when they heard the horrifying news. Today, as we each mark this heartbreaking anniversary in our own ways, I offer Beautiful Music that is reflective and uplifting: LACRIMOSA from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s REQUIEM (featuring Boston Baroque), GOING HOME by Antonin Dvorak (played by cellist Yo-Yo Ma), AMAZING GRACE (performed on lute and viola da gamba by Ronn McFarlane and Caroline Surrick), the aria ERBARME DICH from Johann Sebastian Bach’s ST. MATTHEW PASSION (with alto Eleanor Minney and the English Baroque Soloists, led by John Eliot Gardiner) and John Dowland’s LACHRYMAE (performed by Jordi Savall and Hesperion.)
