Baroque cellos are earlier ancestors of the modern instrument — they varied in characteristics such as using gut strings, lower tension, different tuning, and a different style bow. But just because an instrument was used during a particular era, doesn’t mean it isn’t called for in more modern compositions. Today’s Beautiful Music is a 2020 composition for three baroque cellos called BORROMEAN KNOTS by Maxime McKinley (b. 1979). It was commissioned by the Toronto Music Garden and Socan Foundation, and premiered at the Chapelle historique du Bon Pasteur on September 9, 2020. This performance features Elinor Frey, Andrea Stewart, and Amanda Keesmaat.
