For today’s installment of Beautiful Music in Difficult Times, I’m pleased to share with you one of my all-time favorite recordings. The title — OSTINATO — is a musical term. The Harvard Dictionary of Music (Second Edition) defines OSTINATO as: “A clearly defined phrase that is repeated persistently, usually in immediate succession, throughout a composition or a section.”
The performers are Hesperion XXI with Jordi Savall. From the first notes of this recording, I’m hooked. It makes me want to dance and instantly puts a smile on my face. The music is hypnotic and full of joy, sometimes energetic, sometimes restrained — and it all sounds modern despite being centuries-old.
