In 2017, Han-Na Chang became Artistic Leader and Chief Conductor of the Trondheim Symfoniorkester in Norway, after having been its principal guest conductor in the 2013-14 season. She is the first female conductor to be named chief conductor of the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra. The 38 year old conductor has led orchestras all over the world, and has also played as soloist with many of the world’s great orchestras. That’s because she started her professional career in music at age 11 as a cellist! She won the Grand Prix First Prize and the Contemporary Music Prize at the Fifth Rostropovich International Cello Competition in Paris in 1994. After a few years, Han-Na Chang became interested in conducting, too, and made her professional conducting debut in Korea in 2007. Today’s Beautiful Music features this dynamic and multi-talented musician in both roles: playing the Handel-Halvorsen PASSACAGLIA from a live concert in 2007, and conducting The Trondheim Symphony Orchestra playing Tchaikovky’s Symphony #6 “Pathetique” from a 2019 live concert. There’s also a lovely interview with her about her start in music, and some of the key people and developments in her career, and a link to her bio.
