Instruments, like many inventions, evolve over time. Some of the music you hear on Sunday Baroque is performed on “period” instruments — that is, instruments either crafted during the baroque era, or modern reproductions of instruments of that era. Those period instruments can also add an interesting and lovely twist to music composed much later, and today’s Beautiful Music features modern harpsichord performances of three familiar tunes:
- The folk song HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN, made popular in the 1960s by the British rock band, The Animals
- Paul Desmond’s jazz hit TAKE 5, launched at the 1959 Newport Jazz Festival, and
- The Beatles song BECAUSE, from their 1969 Abbey Road album.
You can also use the link below to learn more about Don Angle, the harpsichordist performing these covers. The late musician’s specialty was playing modern music on the instrument.
