Violinist Rachel Barton Pine is charting a unique and delightful path as a musician. She has performed as a soloist with orchestras, and as a chamber musician. In recent years she has also been a vocal champion of music by Black composers and other underrepresented musicians. She also crafts charming videos of music and conversation with her talented young daughter, Sylvia. They provide today’s Beautiful Music – a live performance from the studios of WFMT Chicago. They’re performing ‘Such Thanks to Spirits’ (1936) from the musical play ‘Afiwa’ by Nicholas Ballanta (1893-1962) and ‘Serenata’ from ‘A Sertaneja’ by the earliest known Black woman composer, Francisca “Chiquinha” Gonzaga (1847-1935).
