Clarinetist Anthony McGill plays Beautiful Music by Johann Sebastian Bach today. The 2000 Avery Fisher Career Grant winner attended Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan and The Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, and in 2020 he won the Avery Fisher Prize. Since 2014 Antony McGill has been the principal clarinet of the New York Philharmonic, the orchestra’s first African-American principal player. Anthony McGill is also a soloist with top orchestras, and a chamber musician who performed at the 2009 US Presidential inauguration with violinist Itzhak Perlman, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and pianist Gabriela Montero. They premiered a piece written for the occasion by John Williams. Anthony McGill is also on the faculty of the Juilliard School, the Curtis Institute of Music, and Bard College’s Conservatory of Music. The Chicago native is now a New Yorker, and this performance is from August 2020, featuring primarily his transcriptions of music by Bach.
