You may be familiar with Ludwig van Beethoven’s Violin Sonata #9 op.47, which is familiarly nicknamed “Kreutzer” after the violinist Rodolphe Kreutzer, to whom it was ultimately dedicated. However, the 1804 composition was originally dedicated to George Polgreen Bridgetower (1778-1860) a virtuoso violinist of Black descent. Beethoven even personally performed the Sonata with Mr. Bridgetower.
Today’s Beautiful Music features the amazing violinist Randall Goosby with pianist Zhu Wang performing the Kreutzer/Bridgetower Sonata. You can also read more about the two talented young performers, as well as George Bridgetower.
