In 1746 George Frideric Handel was commissioned to compose an oratorio for a victory celebration. He based the work on the heroic story of Judah Maccabee – the Jewish leader who defended his country from invasion and whose story informs the celebration of Hanukkah. In addition to the many familiar instruments in a band or orchestra, there are lots of other more obscure instruments, especially in baroque and early music groups. Take “viola d’amore” for example – maybe you’ve never even heard of it, but composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach, Georg Philipp Telemann and Antonio Vivaldi used the instrument in some of their music.
