Esteban Salas was a Cuban composer of religious vocal music. He was born in 1725 – right near the end of the baroque era – and he worked at the cathedral of Santiago de Cuba. The historical period defined as the “baroque era” spanned a whopping 150 years, from 1600 until 1750. Composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach and Antonio Vivaldi were born in the second half of that vast time period, and lived to about its end. Others thrived in the first half of the baroque era, and although they are all considered “baroque” composers, in many cases their lives didn’t even overlap. He’s also been a pioneer in the use of “period” instruments like the ones played during the baroque era.
