Chinese New Year is on January 25 this year. The holiday is traditionally celebrated with family over a meal, along with parades and other festivities. You’re not likely to hear music by Johann Sebastian Bach and Antonio Vivaldi at traditional Chinese New Year celebrations, but on Sunday Baroque you WILL hear some musicians and ensembles of Chinese descent performing their music.
Cellist Yo-Yo Ma recorded Bach’s Six Suites for Unaccompanied Cello 3 times – in his 20s, 40s, and now in his 60s. He rerecorded them to illustrate his evolution with them as a musician. We’ll highlight selections from his most recent recording.

Rodgers and Hammerstein … Lennon and McCartney – they’re just a few successful musical collaborations. In the baroque era, there was George Frideric Handel and his fan and patron Charles Jennens, who partnered with him on MESSIAH, SAUL and other oratorios. And some of Jean Baptiste Lully’s most memorable works were his partnerships with the writer Moliere. We’ll feature some of these early musical collaborators.
